Pope St. Simplicius

Pope St. Simplicius

?483 CE · Tivoli (Tibur)

Simplicius led the Roman church through the final collapse of the Western Empire: during his pontificate the last emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed (476) and Odoacer assumed control of Italy. With imperial authority gone in the West, Simplicius helped position the papacy as a stabilizing institution. In the East he firmly upheld the Council of Chalcedon against the resurgent Monophysite cause, protesting the deposition of orthodox patriarchs and the rise of Acacius of Constantinople, tensions that would soon erupt into the Acacian schism. He also organized pastoral care among Rome's basilicas. His reign marks a pivot from imperial to ecclesiastical Rome.
