Justinian I
482 CE–565 CE · Constantinople
Justinian I ruled the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire from 527 to 565. He ordered the codification of Roman law in the Corpus Juris Civilis, a foundation of later European legal systems, and rebuilt the great church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople after the Nika riots. His generals Belisarius and Narses reconquered Italy, North Africa, and part of Spain, briefly restoring Roman rule over much of the Mediterranean. His long reign also endured a devastating plague.
