Justin I
450 CE–527 CE · Constantinople
Justin I was Byzantine emperor from 518 to 527, a peasant from the Balkans who rose through the army to command the imperial guard before being acclaimed emperor on the death of Anastasius I. Largely uneducated, he relied heavily on his nephew and adopted heir Justinian, whom he groomed as successor and who would go on to rule as Justinian I. His reign restored communion with the papacy by ending the Acacian Schism and reaffirmed the Chalcedonian creed. He founded the Justinian dynasty that would dominate the sixth century.
