Commodianus

Commodianus

?

Commodianus (fl. probably c. 250 CE) was an early Latin Christian poet whose exact origins and life remain deeply uncertain. He is known from two works — the acrostic Instructiones and the Carmen apologeticum — and is mentioned briefly by Gennadius of Marseille. A pagan convert to Christianity, he wrote didactic verse aimed at instructing the unlearned, employing an unconventional popular Latin metre. His home, the city in which he wrote, and the circumstances of his death are all unknown.
