Macrinus
c. 165 CE–c. 218 CE · Cherchell
Marcus Opellius Macrinus (c. 165-218 CE) was a praetorian prefect of Berber/equestrian origin, born at Caesarea in Mauretania (modern Cherchell, Algeria). After orchestrating the assassination of Caracalla in 217, he became the first emperor drawn from the equestrian rather than the senatorial order. His brief reign of about fourteen months ended when he was defeated by supporters of Elagabalus at the Battle of Antioch and executed in 218.
