Otho

c. 32 CEc. 69 CE · Ferento

Marcus Salvius Otho (born 32 CE at Ferentium in Etruria) was the second of the four emperors who ruled during the civil-war year of 69 CE. He seized power after the murder of Galba, whom he had helped overthrow, but was challenged at once by the Rhine legions, who proclaimed their commander Vitellius emperor. Defeated at the first Battle of Bedriacum, Otho took his own life after a reign of about three months, his suicide remembered as an attempt to spare Rome further bloodshed.
