Vitellius

c. 15 CEc. 69 CE · Nocera

Vitellius was the third emperor of the Year of the Four Emperors (69 CE), proclaimed by the Rhine legions in January and recognized after his forces defeated Otho at Bedriacum in April. His brief, contested reign was decisive for the Jewish stream: the upheaval led Vespasian — then commanding the Roman war against the First Jewish Revolt in Judaea — to be proclaimed emperor by the eastern legions on 1 July 69. Vespasian left the Judaean campaign to his son Titus and moved to Egypt while his allies invaded Italy; after Vitellius was overthrown and killed on 20 December 69, the Senate conferred imperial power on Vespasian, whose son Titus destroyed the Second Temple during the siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE.
