Cosmic Struggle & Eviltraced through 40 key works

Achizah (Demonic Grip)

ah-khee-ZAH

Evil gains a foothold in reality when divine light leaks away or gets misdirected—a cosmic mechanism explaining why wrongdoing persists.

In Jewish mystical thought, especially as developed by the Kabbalists of Safed in the 16th century, the universe isn't just a battle between good and evil—it's more like a plumbing problem. When divine light (holiness) flows perfectly, evil has nowhere to cling. But when that light is incomplete, scattered, or misdirected through broken intentions or incomplete actions, the impure side—called the "kelipot" or shells—gets a grip. This grip is *achizah*: a hold, a foothold, a point of leverage.

Think of it like moisture finding cracks in a wall. The cracks themselves don't create the moisture, but they give it somewhere to settle. Similarly, achizah isn't the source of evil; it's the *purchase point* evil gains when holiness withdraws or fractures. This happens not just in the cosmos but in the human soul. A person who harbors an unresolved vice, or who performs a mitzvah (commandment) with divided attention, leaves an opening. As long as that opening exists—as long as achizah persists—the impure force keeps its grip.

Later Hasidic masters, especially Nachman of Breslov, brought this cosmic principle into personal spiritual work. They taught that liberation from a bad habit or evil impulse requires not just fighting it, but completely severing the grip it holds. You can't just manage an achizah; you have to break it entirely. This transformed the concept from abstract cosmic mechanics into a lived practice of spiritual integrity.
