1445 CE–1515 CE · Rishonim · Bertinoro
Ovadia Bartenura (c. 1445–1515) was an Italian-Jewish halakhist and commentator, born in Bartenura, a small town in Umbria. After establishing himself as a respected authority in Italy, he emigrated to the Land of Israel around 1488, settling in Jerusalem during the early Ottoman period. He is best known for his clear, systematic commentary on the Mishnah, which became one of the most widely studied Mishnah commentaries in Jewish tradition. His works combined philosophical insight with practical halakhic guidance, and he was deeply involved in the spiritual and communal life of Jerusalem's Jewish community in his later years.

Born and educated in Bertinoro (Romagna, Italy); the toponym became his name. Studied under R. Yosef Colon (the Maharik).
Bertinoro, a town in the Romagna region of north-central Italy (province of Forlì-Cesena), was the birthplace, around 1445, of Rabbi Obadiah ben Abraham of Bertinoro, author of the standard commentary on the Mishnah that bears his name. He later emigrated to Jerusalem, where he became a leader of the community.
