Eshet Chayil (Friday-Night Recitation)
Every Friday night, Jewish families recite an ancient poem honoring the woman of the household as a mystical embodiment of divine presence.
Eshet Chayil—literally 'woman of valor'—is a passage from the biblical Book of Proverbs (chapter 31) that celebrates a woman's wisdom, strength, and generosity. For centuries, it was simply read as practical advice about managing a household well. But in the 16th century, Jewish mystics in the northern Israeli city of Safed saw something deeper: they began to understand this poem as a love song to the feminine aspect of the divine itself, which Jewish mysticism calls the Shekhinah (the indwelling presence of God).
This mystical reading transformed a practical poem into a spiritual practice. When families gather on Friday evenings—the holiest night of the Jewish week—they now recite these verses before blessing wine. In doing so, they're honoring both the actual woman leading the household and, on a deeper level, invoking divine presence into their home. It became especially popular among Ashkenazi Jews (those from Central and Eastern Europe) and Sephardi Jews (those from Spain, North Africa, and the Mediterranean), spreading from Safed across the Jewish world.
What makes this practice so elegant is that it works on multiple levels at once: it's a practical recognition of a woman's real contributions, a moment of family gathering, and a mystical act of spiritual alignment—all in one traditional song.
