Number & Harmony
Reality decoded as mathematics: the same whole-number ratios that make a plucked string sing in tune are said to govern the entire cosmos.
The idea that number and musical proportion (harmonia) underlie the structure of the cosmos comes from Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans of Croton (6th c. BCE). They discovered that pleasing musical intervals match simple whole-number ratios, then expanded this into a sweeping vision of a numerically ordered universe — including the famous "harmony of the spheres." The idea passed through Plato's Timaeus into Neoplatonism and remained a guiding light for the mathematization of nature right down to Kepler.
