Korban Pesach (The Pesach Sacrifice)
A lamb ritually slaughtered and eaten on Passover's eve, marking the boundary between slavery and freedom.
In ancient times, the Passover sacrifice was the heartbeat of Jewish springtime observance. Each household would select a perfect lamb, slaughter it at the Temple with communal ceremony, roast it whole, and eat it together before dawn—all while dressed for travel, as if ready to flee at any moment. This wasn't just a meal; it was a living re-enactment of the night when God 'passed over' Jewish homes while plague struck Egypt, and the people rushed toward liberation.
After the Temple's destruction nearly 2,000 years ago, this sacrifice became impossible, so Jewish practice shifted. Instead of the actual lamb, families developed new rituals—the symbolic foods on the Passover plate, the retelling of the story, the unleavened bread—that keep the memory and meaning alive. Yet the lamb never left Jewish consciousness. Medieval and modern Jewish thinkers continued to reflect on what made this particular act so central: Why a lamb? Why roasted whole? Why eaten in haste? These questions opened doors to deeper layers of meaning about redemption, covenant, and time itself.
