Pesach (Festival of Passover, umbrella)

PEH-sakh

A seven-day spring festival (eight days in the diaspora) remembering when the ancient Israelites escaped slavery in Egypt, marked by eating unleavened bread and avoiding fermented grains.

Pesach—Passover—is one of Judaism's oldest and most widely observed festivals, centered on the memory of liberation. According to Jewish tradition, God freed the Israelites from Egyptian bondage, and the night before their escape each household marked their doorway with lamb's blood so that God would 'pass over' their homes. That night they ate unleavened bread (matzah) and roasted lamb, dressed for travel, because they had to leave in haste. This event became foundational to Jewish identity and the Jewish calendar.

The festival unfolds across eight days (seven in Israel), each with its own character. The Seder—a ceremonial meal on the first night—retells the story through symbolic foods: bitter herbs for suffering, matzah for urgency, salt water for tears. For the full week, Jews abstain from chametz (leavened products), eating matzah instead, which recalls both the bread of affliction and the speed of departure. Over time, Jewish thinkers drew additional meaning from this practice: leaven came to symbolize pride or the habits of ordinary life, while matzah represented simplicity and readiness for renewal—though these readings are interpretive layers built on top of the law, not the law itself.

Over the centuries the festival has been interpreted in many ways. Medieval philosophers saw in the Exodus a model of political and moral freedom. Kabbalistic writers read it as a metaphor for spiritual liberation. But across all these readings, Pesach remains anchored in historical memory—the obligation that each generation experience the Exodus as its own story, tasting both the bitterness of slavery and the reality of redemption.
