Memaleh Kol Almin (Filling All Worlds)
God's presence actively fills and pervades every corner of creation with a graded, intimate closeness.
Imagine light spreading through a room—it doesn't just exist at one point, but flows into every corner, growing dimmer the farther it travels. Memaleh Kol Almin (literally "filling all worlds") describes how divine light works in Jewish mysticism. Unlike a distant king who rules from a throne, God is understood as intimately present everywhere at once, flowing into creation like water seeking every space. The word "memaleh" means "fills" or "fills completely"—suggesting an active, dynamic presence rather than a cold distance.
What makes this idea especially rich is that it describes God's presence in a *graduated* way. Divine light doesn't fill a stone and a human soul with equal intensity. It fills each thing according to what that thing is capable of receiving. A rock receives God's presence in one way; a human consciousness receives it in a much fuller, more immediate way. This graduated filling appears throughout Jewish mystical texts starting with the medieval Zohar, where it's contrasted with another mode of divine being called Sovev Kol Almin (surrounding all worlds)—one mode is intimate and interior, the other transcendent and beyond.
Over centuries, different mystical teachers elaborated on this idea. Some emphasized how it means creation has no real independent existence—it's held in being moment by moment by divine presence. Others developed it as a teaching tool for prayer and contemplation: if God fills all worlds, then encountering the sacred is not about traveling somewhere else, but perceiving the divine light already present here.
