Sovev Kol Almin (Encompassing All Worlds)
God's light surrounds and encompasses all creation equally, without boundaries or differentiation.
Imagine two ways that infinite light could relate to a finite world. One way is like water filling a container—the light enters in and fills every space, adapting to the shape of what it touches. The other way is like the sun shining on the earth—its light surrounds everything equally from the outside, never truly entering or being limited by anything below it. Sovev Kol Almin (which means 'Encompassing All Worlds') describes this second mode: the transcendent aspect of divine light that hovers above all creation, touching everything equally without being contained, shaped, or differentiated by what it encounters.
The idea emerged gradually in Jewish mystical texts. Early medieval sources noticed passages in the Zohar suggesting that divine light operates in two complementary ways—one that permeates and fills, another that surrounds and transcends. Over centuries, particularly through the teachings of Isaac Luria and his students, and then through the Hasidic masters (especially in Chabad), this concept became increasingly refined. Thinkers like Shneur Zalman of Liadi gave it tremendous emphasis, exploring how the encompassing light relates to the individual soul, to Torah study, and to the resurrection of the dead. Later teachers continued to reinterpret how this transcendent quality works practically—not as a remote or abstract idea, but as something present and accessible through prayer and religious practice.
