Mesorah (Tradition/Transmission)
The chain of Jewish tradition — the transmission of Torah, law, and learning from teacher to student across the generations.
Mesorah means 'transmission' or 'tradition' — the idea that sacred Jewish teachings were not simply preserved in books, but handed down directly from teacher to student, generation after generation. The concept encompasses two related but distinct strands: the precise textual transmission of the Hebrew Bible (the Masoretic tradition, which carefully preserved spelling, vowels, and cantillation marks), and the broader oral handing-down of interpretation and practice from Sinai onward.
In rabbinic literature, the opening of Pirkei Avot famously traces this chain: Moses received Torah at Sinai and passed it to Joshua, Joshua to the elders, and so on. The chain of transmission became a way of establishing the authority and authenticity of legal rulings and interpretive traditions — a teaching carried reliably through recognized sages held greater weight than one appearing without a clear lineage.
Mystical literature gave the concept additional texture. Kabbalistic writers emphasized that certain teachings were too delicate to be learned from books alone and required a living teacher who had received them through an unbroken line. By the time of the Arizal in 16th-century Safed, and later among Hasidic masters, the question of who stood in a legitimate chain of transmission was taken very seriously. But this mystical application built on a foundation already well established in rabbinic and legal culture, where mesorah had long been the backbone of how Jewish tradition understood its own continuity.
