Peah (Corner of the Field for the Poor)
Leave the corners of your harvest unharvested so the poor can gather food with dignity.
Peah is one of Judaism's oldest social laws: when you harvest your field, you must intentionally leave a corner—literally an uncut corner—standing for anyone in need to gather. It's not charity handed down from above, but an opportunity for the poor to feed themselves through their own work and effort.
The rabbis developed this biblical rule with remarkable detail over centuries. They asked: How large must a corner be? What counts as a 'field'? Can you leave the worst corner, or must it be decent enough to harvest? These practical questions reveal something deeper—the law treats the poor person not as a passive recipient but as someone entitled to access food. You're not giving them leftovers; you're preserving a portion of the harvest as rightfully theirs from the start.
Later Jewish thinkers extended peah's logic beyond agriculture, seeing it as a model for how to structure society itself: build generosity and access to basic needs directly into how you do business and live, rather than treating it as an afterthought. Kabbalistic writers also gave peah a mystical dimension, reading the unharvested corner as a spiritual gesture linking the harvester to the divine order of creation—but the law's primary home is in practical ethics and communal responsibility.
