Repentance in Jewish thought: a practical process of turning from wrongdoing, developed across law, ethics, and mystical tradition.

Teshuvah (tesh-oo-VAH) means turning back — returning from a wrong path through recognition of what went wrong, genuine remorse, and a firm commitment to act differently. In its most foundational form, as worked out in Jewish law and ethics, it is a structured process: you acknowledge the harm, you feel the weight of it, you stop repeating the behavior, and you resolve to change. The Talmud treats teshuvah as among the most fundamental human capacities, and Maimonides codified it in careful detail — what sincere repentance requires, how it works when the wronged party can no longer be found, and how the Day of Atonement relates to the process.

Over time, Jewish thinkers deepened their understanding of teshuvah in different directions. Ethical writers of the medieval period, like Jonah of Gerona, explored its emotional and psychological dimensions — the inner work of genuine change. Kabbalists, especially in the circle of Safed in the sixteenth century, mapped teshuvah onto their understanding of the divine structure, seeing it as a force that could repair damage on multiple levels of reality. Hasidic teachers later emphasized teshuvah as an ongoing spiritual orientation rather than a single dramatic act — a continuous return to one's best self and to God that could happen in small moments throughout the day. All of these layers sit within the tradition, but the core of teshuvah remains the ethical: honest acknowledgment, genuine change, and renewed commitment.
