Bumin Qaghan

Bumin Qaghan (died 552) was the founder of the First Turkic Khaganate, the Göktürk state on the eastern steppe. He was originally a chieftain of the Turks under the overlordship of the Rouran Khaganate. After building up his strength and allying with the Western Wei of China, he rose against the Rouran and defeated them in 552. He then proclaimed himself Illig Qaghan at the sacred region of Ötüken, but died only months later, leaving the new realm to his successors.
