Pope St. John I
?–526 CE · Siena
John I, a Tuscan, became pope as the alliance between the Ostrogothic king Theodoric and the orthodox Christians of Italy was breaking down. Theodoric, an Arian, sent the elderly pope to Constantinople to persuade Emperor Justin I to soften measures against Arians in the East, an unprecedented papal embassy to the imperial capital. John was received with great honor and reportedly crowned Justin, but he could not fully satisfy Theodoric's demands. On his return the suspicious king imprisoned him at Ravenna, where he died, weakened by harsh treatment. He was venerated as a martyr for the troubled circumstances of his death.
