Caligula
c. 12 CE–c. 41 CE · Anzio
Caligula (Gaius) was a Julio-Claudian emperor (reigned 37–41 CE) remembered for erratic cruelty and extravagance, assassinated by officers of the Praetorian Guard. During his reign the Jewish philosopher Philo of Alexandria led an embassy to him (recorded in Philo's Legatio ad Gaium) seeking redress after anti-Jewish riots in Alexandria in 38 CE. Caligula also ordered his statue installed in the Temple in Jerusalem; the Syrian governor Petronius delayed carrying out the order amid mass Jewish protest, and the crisis ended only with Caligula's assassination in 41 CE.
