Pope St. Boniface IV
?–615 CE · Valeria region (Marsica)
Boniface IV came from the Valeria region in the central Apennines and had served in the Roman Church under Gregory the Great, whose monastic ideals he embraced—he converted his own house into a monastery. As pope he obtained the emperor Phocas's permission to convert the Pantheon into a Christian church, dedicating it to St. Mary and the Martyrs, an act often cited as preserving that ancient building. He maintained correspondence with the Church in Britain and Ireland. Venerated as a saint, he governed during continued Lombard pressure and was buried in St. Peter's.
