Pope St. Vitalian
?–672 CE · Segni
Vitalian governed during the Monothelite controversy that had bitterly divided Rome and Constantinople. He pursued reconciliation with the Byzantine emperor, restoring communion with the East, and received Emperor Constans II during the latter's 663 visit to Rome — the last by a reigning emperor for centuries. Vitalian is traditionally credited with promoting church music and sending Theodore of Tarsus and the abbot Hadrian to organize the English church at Canterbury, a decision of lasting consequence for English Christianity. His pontificate balanced loyalty to imperial authority against Rome's defense of orthodox doctrine.
