Pope St. Martin I
?–655 CE · Todi
Martin I, born near Todi in Umbria, served as papal envoy at Constantinople before his election, which he undertook without awaiting imperial confirmation. He convened the Lateran Synod of 649, which forcefully condemned Monothelitism and the emperor's edicts. For this defiance, Emperor Constans II had him arrested in 653, carried to Constantinople, tried, publicly humiliated, and condemned; his sentence was commuted to exile in the Crimea, where he died of harsh treatment in 655. Honored as a martyr by both Catholic and Orthodox Churches, he is traditionally counted the last pope venerated as a martyr.
