Kashrut (Jewish Dietary Law, umbrella)
A detailed system of rules about which foods Jews can eat and how to prepare them with spiritual intention.
Kashrut is the Jewish dietary law system — a set of rules that determines what's permitted to eat, how animals must be slaughtered humanely, which foods can't be eaten together, and how cooking vessels need to be prepared. It comes from the Torah (the Five Books of Moses) and has been elaborated over centuries into a precise practice. For those who observe it, kashrut is woven into daily life: checking labels, shopping at certified markets, maintaining separate dishes for meat and dairy, and knowing the rules around Passover.
What makes kashrut interesting to outsiders is that it's not primarily about hygiene or health, though it has those effects. Instead, it's understood as a spiritual discipline — a way of bringing mindfulness and restraint into something as ordinary as eating. By following these rules, observers say they're affirming their covenant with God and training themselves in awareness. Over time, different Jewish communities developed their own customs within the broader framework: Ashkenazi Jews (from Central and Eastern Europe) have different practices than Sephardi Jews (from Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East), and modern movements like Conservative and Reform Judaism have their own interpretations.
