1881 CE–1965 CE · Acharonim · Hrimlov
Rabbi Dov Berish Weidenfeld (1881-1965), widely known as the Tchebiner Rav, was born in Hrimlov (Hrymailiv) in Galicia, the son of Rabbi Yaakov Weidenfeld, author of the responsa collection Kochav MiYaakov. For many years he pursued Torah study while supporting his family through a coal business, answering halachic questions by correspondence long before he took formal office. In 1923 he accepted the rabbinate of Trzebinia (Tshebin), Poland, where he led the local court and founded a yeshiva named Kochav MiYaakov in his father's memory. In 1937 he issued his responsa work Dovev Meisharim. Fleeing the Second World War, he reached Lwów and was later exiled to the Sverdlovsk region of Siberia. He arrived in Jerusalem in 1946, settled in Shaarei Chesed, reestablished his yeshiva, and joined Agudat Israel's Council of Torah Sages.
