Tzimtzum Kifshuto vs. Lo Kifshuto (Literal vs. Non-literal Tzimtzum)

TSIM-tsoom kif-SHOO-toh (literal) vs. loh kif-SHOO-toh (non-literal)

The great question of whether the "contraction" is meant literally — where Ramchal's whole system reads it as a Mashal, a matter of perspective, not a real withdrawal.

After the Arizal taught Tzimtzum, a central question arose: did God *literally* withdraw to make an empty space, or is "contraction" a metaphor? In the worldview of these writings — following R. Chaim of Volozhin and Ramchal — it is emphatically *not* literal. From our side, creation is real (no more "illusion" than a wave is illusory); but from the Infinite's own perspective, nothing was ever vacated and nothing ever changed. Tzimtzum and the whole interplay of Kav and Reshimu are, fundamentally, a matter of perspective on one seamless reality.
