Hulagu Khan

Hulagu Khan (c. 1217–1265) was a grandson of Genghis Khan and the founder of the Ilkhanate, the Mongol state in Persia. Sent west by his brother Möngke, he captured Baghdad in 1258, bringing the Abbasid Caliphate to an end. His advance into Syria was halted by the Mamluks at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260. He then established himself as the first Ilkhan, ruling Iran and neighboring lands from 1256 until his death in 1265.
