Razia Sultana

Razia Sultana

?1240 CE · Delhi

Razia Sultana, a daughter of Iltutmish, was the first and only woman to rule the Delhi Sultanate as sovereign (1236–1240). She came to the throne over the claims of her brothers and sought to govern in her own right, which brought her into conflict with the Turkic nobility. She was deposed in 1240 and killed shortly afterward near Kaithal.
