Aybak

Izz al-Din Aybak (died 1257) was the first sultan of the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt in the Bahri line, taking power in 1250 after the fall of the Ayyubids. His accession was closely bound up with his marriage to Shajar al-Durr, the widow of the last effective Ayyubid sultan. His reign was troubled by rivalries among the Mamluk commanders. He was assassinated in 1257, and Shajar al-Durr was killed soon after.
