Iltutmish

Shams ud-Din Iltutmish was a former slave and son-in-law of Qutb ud-Din Aibak who is regarded as the effective founder and consolidator of the Delhi Sultanate (reigned 1211–1236). He secured the sultanate against rivals, obtained formal recognition from the Abbasid caliph, and organized its administration and coinage. He also kept the sultanate largely clear of the Mongol advance under Genghis Khan. He died in 1236, having nominated his daughter Razia as his successor.
