Möngke Khan

Möngke Khan (1209–1259) was the fourth Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, a grandson of Genghis Khan who came to power in 1251. He reformed the empire's administration and finances and ordered a wide-ranging census of its lands. He directed two major campaigns: sending his brother Hulagu into the Middle East and his brother Kublai against Song China. He died in 1259 while on campaign in China, and the dispute over his succession divided the empire.
