Sundiata Keita
?–1255 CE · Niani (Mali)
Sundiata Keita is remembered as the founder of the Mali Empire in the 13th century. According to the Mande oral epic that bears his name, he united the Malinke chiefdoms and defeated the Sosso ruler Sumanguru at the Battle of Kirina, establishing his rule over the Niger heartland. Tradition credits him with a foundational charter organizing the new state. His empire grew into one of the great powers of West Africa, controlling the gold and salt trade of the western Sudan until his death around 1255.
