Baybars

Al-Zahir Baybars (c. 1223-1277) was the fourth Mamluk sultan of Egypt and Syria and is often regarded as a principal founder of the Mamluk state. He had commanded troops at the Mamluk victory over the Mongols at Ain Jalut in 1260 before taking the throne later that year. Over a reign of seventeen years he campaigned repeatedly against the Crusader states and the Mongols and reorganized the sultanate's army and administration. He died at Damascus in 1277.
