Pupienus

c. 164 CEc. 238 CE · Volterra

Marcus Clodius Pupienus Maximus (c. 164–238 CE) was a Roman senator who, with Balbinus, was proclaimed co-emperor by the Senate in 238 CE during the turbulent Year of the Six Emperors, raised to oppose the Thracian usurper Maximinus Thrax. After a reign of roughly 99 days the two co-emperors were seized, tortured, and killed by the Praetorian Guard, who resented rule chosen by the Senate. His origins are obscure; rather than Rome, his family is generally associated with the Etruscan city of Volterra, and the Historia Augusta's claim of humble birth is generally rejected by modern scholarship.
