Emperor Gaozu of Tang (Li Yuan)

Emperor Gaozu of Tang, born Li Yuan, was a Sui general and Duke of Tang who rose in revolt as the Sui dynasty disintegrated. Capturing the capital Chang'an, he proclaimed the Tang dynasty in 618 and worked to pacify rival contenders. Much of the military consolidation was achieved by his son Li Shimin, who, after the Xuanwu Gate Incident of 626, induced Gaozu to abdicate; he lived out his years as retired emperor.
