Emperor Gaozong of Tang (Li Zhi, 628-683 CE) was the third emperor of China's Tang dynasty, reigning from 649 to 683. Under his rule the empire reached its greatest territorial extent, with campaigns that destroyed the Western Turkic Khaganate and, in alliance with Silla, the kingdom of Goguryeo in Korea. From the 660s, as his health declined, he increasingly shared governance with his wife, the Empress Wu, who would later rule in her own right as Wu Zetian, China's only female emperor.
