Yazdegerd III
624 CE–651 CE · Ctesiphon
Yazdegerd III was the last king of the Sasanian Empire of Persia, reigning from 632 to 651. He came to the throne as a young man amid internal turmoil, just as the Arab armies of the early Islamic conquests began to advance against Persia. Decisive defeats, notably at al-Qadisiyyah and Nahavand, shattered Sasanian resistance and led to the collapse of the empire. Yazdegerd fled eastward and was killed in 651 near Merv, bringing to an end more than four centuries of Sasanian rule over Iran.
