Yuknoom Ch'een II, remembered as 'Yuknoom the Great,' was the most powerful king of the Kaan or Snake dynasty, ruling Calakmul for fifty years from 636 to 686. Through war and a web of vassal alliances he brought rival Tikal to heel—defeating it in 657 and reducing its king to a vassal—and backed the breakaway kingdom of Dos Pilas. Under him Calakmul reached the peak of its influence as the dominant power of the Maya lowlands, though its hegemony faded soon after his death.
