Toyotomi Hideyoshi

Toyotomi Hideyoshi rose from humble origins to become the ablest general of Oda Nobunaga, and after Nobunaga's death he completed the reunification of Japan by 1590. Barred from the office of shogun by his low birth, he ruled as imperial regent (kampaku). He carried out a nationwide land survey and a 'sword hunt' that disarmed the peasantry, freezing the boundaries between social classes. In his final years he launched two costly invasions of Korea before his death in 1598.
