Pope Gregory XIV
1535 CE–1591 CE · Somma Lombardo
Born Niccolo Sfondrati near Milan, Gregory XIV was a pious and reserved figure shaped by his friendship with Charles Borromeo. Bishop of Cremona and a participant in the Council of Trent, he was elected with strong Spanish backing. His short pontificate was dominated by intervention in the French Wars of Religion: he excommunicated the Protestant claimant Henry of Navarre and financed Catholic League forces, a policy that deepened Rome's entanglement in French affairs. He also issued reforms against abuses in the Americas and curbed excessive betting on papal elections. Ill health limited his rule, and he died after about ten months.
