Pope Clement VIII

1536 CE1605 CE · Fano

Born Ippolito Aldobrandini in Fano to a Florentine family in exile, Clement VIII governed for thirteen consequential years. His greatest diplomatic achievement was reconciling Henry IV of France with the Church after the king's conversion, easing France's wars of religion and loosening Spanish dominance over the papacy. In 1598 he annexed the Duchy of Ferrara to the Papal States. A patron of reform, he revised liturgical books and oversaw the Congregatio de Auxiliis debates on grace. His reign is also marked by the controversial execution of Giordano Bruno in 1600 and the trial of Beatrice Cenci, which remain subjects of historical debate.
