Elizabeth I, daughter of Henry VIII, reigned as queen of England from 1558 to 1603. She established a lasting Protestant settlement of the Church of England and navigated decades of religious and political tension, including rivalry with Catholic Spain. In 1588 English forces repelled the Spanish Armada, a celebrated moment of her reign. Her long rule, the Elizabethan era, saw a flourishing of drama, poetry, and overseas exploration; she never married and was called the 'Virgin Queen.'
