Provence (France)
Avignon, a city in Provence in southern France, had a long-standing Jewish community that, as part of the papal Comtat Venaissin, survived the expulsions from the Kingdom of France. It was associated with the polymath Rabbi Levi ben Gershon (Gersonides, Ralbag), one of the foremost Jewish philosophers, astronomers, and Bible commentators of the Middle Ages, who lived in the region in the fourteenth century.
