Pope Bl. Urban V
1310 CE–1370 CE · Grizac (Gévaudan)
Born Guillaume de Grimoard in the Gévaudan, Urban V was a Benedictine monk and canon-law scholar, the only Avignon pope to be beatified. Elected though not a cardinal, he retained his monastic austerity and was a notable patron of learning, founding and funding universities and supporting poor students. In 1367 he made a celebrated but short-lived return of the papacy to Rome, encouraged by Petrarch and St. Bridget of Sweden; finding Italy turbulent, he went back to Avignon in 1370 and died soon after. Devout, reform-minded, and personally simple, he was beatified in 1870.
