Pope John XXII
1244 CE–1334 CE · Cahors
Born Jacques Duèze in Cahors, John XXII was the second Avignon pope and one of the most administratively energetic of the medieval papacy. A trained jurist, he reorganized Church finances and the papal bureaucracy, expanding the system of benefices and reservations that critics decried as venal. He clashed bitterly with the Franciscan Spirituals over apostolic poverty and with Emperor Louis IV of Bavaria, who installed an antipope against him. His own speculative views on the Beatific Vision provoked controversy and a partial retraction. A formidable, contentious administrator, he consolidated Avignon as the papacy's working capital.
