Pope Gregory XI
1329 CE–1378 CE · Maumont (Rosiers-d'Égletons)
Born Pierre Roger de Beaufort, nephew of Clement VI, Gregory XI was the last French and last Avignon pope. Made a cardinal as a youth by his uncle, he was a cultured canon lawyer elected at forty. Urged by Catherine of Siena, Bridget of Sweden, and the chaos of the War of the Eight Saints against Florence, he resolved to restore the papacy to Rome, completing the journey in 1377 and ending the nearly seventy-year Avignon residency. He died in Rome the following year; the disputed conclave that followed ignited the Western Schism, making his return a pivotal hinge of papal history.
