Pope Clement VI
1291 CE–1352 CE · Maumont (Rosiers-d'Égletons)
Born Pierre Roger in the Limousin, Clement VI was a learned Benedictine and brilliant preacher who became the most lavish and worldly of the Avignon popes. A patron of art and scholarship who employed Petrarch's circle, he expanded the papal palace and purchased the city of Avignon outright. His pontificate spanned the Black Death of 1348; he issued bulls protecting Jews from massacre, condemning the false charge that they had caused the plague. He proclaimed the 1350 Jubilee and asserted sweeping papal authority. Generous, cultured, and openly nepotistic, he embodied both the splendor and the criticism that defined the Avignon court.
