Pope Innocent VI
1282 CE–1362 CE · Les Monts (Beyssac)
Born Étienne Aubert in the Limousin, Innocent VI was a jurist and cardinal elected at Avignon after the cardinals signed an electoral capitulation he later annulled. He pursued reform of clerical luxury and corruption, reversing some of his predecessor's extravagance, and worked to restore order in the Papal States through his vigorous legate Cardinal Gil de Albornoz, whose military campaigns recovered much of central Italy. He helped negotiate the Treaty of Brétigny in the Hundred Years' War. Frail and cautious, he laid groundwork for an eventual return to Rome that he did not live to undertake.
