Boris Yeltsin

Boris Yeltsin (1931–2007) was the first President of the Russian Federation, elected in 1991 as the Soviet Union was breaking apart. He rose to prominence by publicly resisting the hardline coup attempt against Gorbachev in August 1991, famously standing atop a tank outside the Russian parliament. As president he oversaw Russia's transition from a state-controlled system to a market economy, a wrenching process marked by severe economic hardship, political conflict, and instability, including the constitutional crisis of 1993 and war in Chechnya. He resigned at the end of 1999, handing power to Vladimir Putin.
